A Will Is No Longer Enough: Many people have diversified their assets into 401(k) accounts, IRAs, annuities and other savings and investment vehicles. Where once a simple Will was enough, this added financial complexity comes with an increasing need to plan. Today, a comprehensive plan including a Living Trust, Back Up Wills, Powers of Attorney, Health Care Directives and other special beneficiary designations may be needed.
- A Will:
- Has no effect or usefulness until its maker dies.
- Must be probated in a court proceeding.
- Typically requires 6 to 24 months to settle in Probate Court.
- All probate documents are open to the public.
